May Favourites 2016 | The Small Desk

It's 7pm on Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend and I'm flagging. You know that feeling when you have so much to do that you just do nothing because you don't know where to start? Yeah, that's what I've got right now. Although clearly I can find the time to blog. Why?! Well, it's almost the end of May, and since November 2014 I've not missed a favourites post. I would love to hit the two year mark with these posts. I find them quite therapeutic and a really nice way to round off the month, despite finding it initially stressful trying to find the time to write them. I think in an ideal world I'd like to spend four days working full-time and one day working on my own little projects, like this podcast idea I have that I've never attempted to start. Anyway, enough with the ramble, here are my favourites of the month...

1. Bath trip
At the beginning of the month my then-boyfriend took me on a surprise weekend trip to Bath. We left on the Sunday morning and got back on the Bank Holiday Monday... engaged! I had no idea that we were going to Bath or even away for the weekend. He planned it all in secret and booked a lovely hotel and a vegetarian place for lunch. We also went to the Bath spas, not the Roman ones, the ones you can actually go in. They were amazing, despite the 90 minute queue.

2. Engagement
So, yes, as I said above, I got engaged! The boyf proposed to me at the top of the hill in Prior Park in Bath. It was so perfect, I am a very very lucky girl. The ring is by my favourite jewellery designer and I am obsessed.

3. Celebrating with friends and family
Once you're engaged everyone wants to see the ring and hear the story, so naturally I've done a lot of celebrating with friends and family in various restaurants. It's been delightful!

4. All clear on the smear
Like all women in the UK, I had to go for another smear test as it's been three years since my last one, oh the joy of turning 28! Luckily I got the all clear. I know many women do not and so if you are reading this and dreading going for your first smear test, I urge you to go. It is so important and what an incredible service to get for free. It can be uncomfortable but it is 100% worth it.

5. Friend's birthday and Eurovision
It was my friend's birthday this month and his girlfriend celebrated by throwing an amazing Eurovision-themed birthday party. We had food from every country, someone even brought sauerkraut...

6. Friend's for dinner
One of my old school friends, who is a meat eater, invited me and my veggie friend over for a veggie burger and chips to celebrate vegetarian week! One day I'll go vegan...

7. Going to fiancé's parents
We went to my fiancé's parents for the day... that feels weird saying fiancé! His grandparents came over and his Mum bought us an amazing chocolate cake.

8. Walk with my sister and Dad
I went on a walk with my sister and my Dad in Richmond Park and we had cake... enough said. I love cake, oh and my family... hehe.

9. Day off to sort house move
I took the day off work this week to sort moving house. There is so much to do! I spent most of the day cancelling bills and basically doing things that you can only do during work hours. Hopefully we are moving into our new home soon!

10. Promotion
Finally, I got a promotion at work.

How was your May? What was your favourite part?

Why I haven't blogged for a while | The Small Desk

I know, I know, you shouldn't make excuses, and the path to hell is paved with good intentions and all that. But I just want you all to know that I'm not abandoning this blog and that there are good reasons why I haven't felt inspired to write, and why I haven't had to time to blog.

Like most creative outputs you need time, not only to make and do, but also to think. You need time to think about what you want to write: to thrash out an idea and to craft it. You need to be able to have time to allow yourself to be inspired, and you need to feel like you have 'brain space'. At the moment I feel my brain is overloaded.

We are in the final stages of buying a house, and this is pretty much all I can think about. We are not able to book any removal services yet because we don't know exactly when we're moving in but it could be in two weeks time. It stresses me out to think that I can't get a service booked further in advance, yet at the same time I'm trying to get as many quotes as possible because that's the only thing I can do to prepare. There's just one final thing that needs confirming but it's taking ages and I have to make phone calls to the estate agents and solicitor every day to push them to move on things. It's exhausting.

Secondly, everything at work is changing. There's a restructure of my department going on, and a colleague of mine whom I've worked with for over five years is leaving. I've had a lot of tense and difficult conversations with a number of colleagues this month and it's been mentally draining. On the positive side I am still on the right career path for me and I'm now commissioning content, which is fun. I know it won't be like this forever, but at the moment it is hard.

Another thing that has prevented me from blogging is not feeling as though I have guaranteed quiet time at home. My neighbours are getting better but they still randomly play loud bass music at 10pm, which is the time I would blog. When we move into this new place there is space in the middle of the house for a desk, which is far away from both neighbours and we won't have anyone living downstairs because we'll have a whole house. I can't wait!

As if that wasn't enough, I've been socialising more than normal as I got engaged at the beginning of the month. Now, I'm 100% not complaining about this but it has meant I've had less time in the evenings.

I will do a May favourites, but as you can see it's been a month of two halves. I can't wait to move into my new house and for things to settle down again at work. I really feel I can then start this blog moving again and hopefully write better and more interesting posts for you to enjoy. I'm also super happy that I'm marrying the boy I've been obsessed with for the last eight years! Thanks for sticking with me, it means the world!

April Favourites 2016 | The Small Desk

This month has been quite the month for birthdays. First it was the boyfriend's Mum's birthday, then my sister's, then mine, then one of my best friends'! It has also been the month where everything has been hotting up house-wise. We've now signed the contract and are on track to complete in the next few weeks. Needless to say I've been lusting after far too much expensive homeware and furniture; I must focus on buying boring things like a fridge-freezer!

One of my absolute favourites this month was going to the o2 arena to see Macklemore and Ryan Lewis live. It was my favourite gig of all time, and I had SO much fun. I absolutely love everything that those guys stand for and it's amazing to see them become so popular and successful independently. Anyway, on with the favourites...

1. Day out to Natural History Museum
I went to see the Wildlife Photography exhibition with one of my old school friends. It was a great exhibition and it was nice to catch up one on one.

2. Brighton
I went to Brighton for my sister's birthday. I always love going to Brighton and seeing the sea. It was lots of fun as we even went on the merry-go-round!

3. My birthday
I turned the grand old age of 28 in April. I celebrated with friends by staying in a pub for 10 hours!

4. Cos trip
The boyfriend's parents gave me some money to spend in Cos, my favourite clothes shop. I bought a summer coat, a jumper and a T-shirt.

5. Dinner with the family
We went to a local restaurant to celebrate my birthday.

6. Weekend with the boyf's family
We stayed the night at the boyfriend's parents to celebrate his parent's wedding anniversary. We had a delicious meal in a country pub out in the middle of nowhere.

7. Friend's birthday cocktails
The same friend I went to the NHM with had her birthday in a cocktail bar in Soho. It was lots of fun and good to catch up with everyone.

8. Wahaca
I went to Wahaca with the boyf and a couple we are good friends with. They witnessed our mortgage contract being signed for us, eeeekkk!!

9. Macklemore
As I said above... BEST GIG EVER.

10. Grandma birthday
We went to Ask Italian restaurant and had a nice meal catching up. It was my Grandma's 87th birthday!

How was your April? Get up to anything fun?
